Social Media has the ability to give a false sense of security. You’re likely to feel more confident messaging that crush that you’ve always had and liking a few of their pictures, as opposed to walking right up to them and telling them that you like them, with the possibility of being rejected face to face. Social Media tends to amplify people’s true desires which is why it’s one of the best things to ever happen in the world of advertisement. Do you want to know a little bit about yourself? Look at your search history and what’s being advertised to you. The choices you make on the internet are merely a part of a reflection of you. This is where accountability comes into play.
You may have commonly heard “Social Media Ruins Relationships”. That statement alone tells you what kind of person you are talking to. They don’t take accountability for their actions. They blame outside factors. I personally hate when someone hides behind that claim. “Facebook ruins relationships"… Mark Zuckerberg did not message Big Booty Brenda “You up?” At 1:00 am on your behalf. That was you. That is what you desired to do. Facebook was just the platform you used to do it. Regardless of the platform, that is what you wanted to do.
Cheaters have existed since the beginning of time, let’s not get it twisted. Back in the day, due to little to no internet access, you can move 10 miles down, then start a whole new family and life. Social Media and the world of the internet has taken away that privacy. Cheaters have not increased, there is just a convenient way now to expose them. Social media is what you make it. You can send your ex from high school a friend request or not. You can follow people you do not know (with intentions of getting to know them) or not. It is up to you. Social media has only made the desires of your heart a little more convenient to access. How you conduct yourself on these platforms are purely your choice.
You’re probably analyzing the third paragraph above and only got “Social media makes cheating convenient” from it. You’re probably thinking how you’re going to break the news to your partner that they have to delete their social media. Before you act, think about this. Why do you feel as though they are one of those people who should not be on social media? Do you truly trust them to conduct themselves respectfully online? Do they crumble upon temptation? If the thought of them on social media makes you uncomfortable to the point that you need all passwords, a joint account, or no social media at all, it is time to revisit the topic of trust in your relationship. The same person who cheats online is the same person who will flirt with their co-worker that they spend 8 hours a day and 5 times a week with. At the end of the day, you have the choice to choose your actions on what you prioritize. You may never stop being attracted to other people. However, if your significant other and your love and respect for them is a high priority, that trumps attraction and fleeting feelings for other people anyway. Be with someone with integrity. Unfaithful people only find sneakier ways to be unfaithful after getting caught. They never magically become faithful no matter the platform. People always find ways to access their true desires.
