How to Elevate Your Life During Your Commute

My goals were demanding my attention but so was my 40 hour a week job. For a little while, I neglected the things my heart was begging me to do because I was prioritizing my day job. Fortunately,  wisdom kicked in. Instead of giving the majority of myself to my vocation, I incorporate my work days into what I needed to do for myself. My commute is apart of my day besides lunch, that isn't on the clock. I drive 15 minutes to the train station and ride about an hour on the train to go to work. I do it all again when it's time to leave. Instead of just driving in silence or just scrolling through Twitter on the train, I started to make my commute purposeful.  Success is merely a build up of efforts you put towards your main goal. This is how I spend my commute.

Inspiration to the Station

Every morning I listen to an inspirational speech or story during my drive to the train station. It is dark, cold, and early when I leave out for work. It's so easy to feel gloomy. However, hearing how capable I am of having a great day, and how my efforts are worth it, gets me in a positive mood when I walk into the office. I go into work pumped up and determined to be prolific. I start my day off with the right words and the right mindset. This has noticeably shifted my life. I attract more positivity and abundance because my mind is programmed in it.  A few of my favorite apps to listen through is Peptalk Motivation, Sanity & Self, I listen to a lot of Les Brown and Lisa Nichols on YouTube, and Fearless Motivation on Apple Music.

Learn and Drive

Another thing I love to do while driving or riding on the train is to listen to TED talks. Anything I want to learn, there's a TED talk on it. I've been listening to how to use the power of visualization, how to stop procrastinating, how to save money, what are the habits of successful people, etc. The learning capabilities are endless. Another thing you can learn during your commute is another language. Our world is way too diverse to stick to one language. Broaden your horizon and communication.

Read and Ride

The time to read gets more and more scarce for me. My train ride, however, allows me to get some reading in and also give my phone a break. Right now I am reading Think and Grow Rich. My goal is to read one book per week. My train ride is an hour there and an hour back. That's 10 hours a week. This has left me with no excuse not to reach my goal. 10 hours is enough time to read. If you need both hands and your eyes during your commute, consider audio books.

Plan and Write

If I'm not reading, I am writing. Some of my greatest blog posts were created on the train. Some of the goals that I've written in my journal were written on the train. Instead of sitting there looking out of the window, I use that time to get things done and plan.

Decompress

The day may have been stressful to the point you can't focus on a book or your journal. That's okay. It happens. When I have days like this I listen to my Sanity & Self app and meditate. If I don't want to hear another human voice, I go to youtube and listen to an audio of relaxing sounds such as the ocean, a soapy bath, nature, or instrumentals that are geared to relaxation. This has saved me from going to bed angry plenty of times, which you should NEVER do. Don't bring in negative energy into your house. Drop that off during your commute because your home is supposed to be your sanctuary.

Those are just a few things I do during my commute that has improved my life. Comment below and share with other Roses what you do during that time. Whether your commute is short or long, there is always time to fit something in that will improve your life.

  1. Oh! I love this. I do a lot of these things because I have a long car ride home, and it feels better to use the time to reflect or listen to podcasts instead of just sitting in traffic listening to music.

  2. In the morning, the only music I listen to is praise, worship or inspirational music. I drive 23 minute to work so I also talk to God, do my affirmations and sing praises to him during that 23 minute drive. Starting my day like that has been life changing. I rarely have bad days.
